If you’ve ever had the pleasure of staying in Key West for a month or more, you’ve experienced how renewing these tropical sojourns can be. Getting There: ‘Exclusive is never normal,’ and in this case it’s the way you arrive to this special Key West island destination. A 500 yard Ferry boat ride, exclusive for guests only, transports you just far enough away from the ‘best of the bustle’ of Old Town, to the dock at Sunset Key. A fabulous feature, the short-but-sweet 5 minute boat ride, is on call to transport you every 30 minutes – 24 hours a day, and it places this exotic island oasis in a caliber of preeminence.

Our tour begins with the ferry arrival at the dock on Sunset Key, where there is an air of distinction as soon as you land. The scene reminds me of prestigious estates I’ve visited in The Bahamas, with an iconic boat-house at the landing dock, private white sandy beaches with coconut palms create an impressive entry point at the island shore. A path surrounded with manicured topical landscaping leads to a classic island colonial mansion-style building where you find reception, and the restaurant, bar, and resort amenities.

To reach the house, we continue past the resort reception, and follow a walkway a short distance, just past the tennis courts. It can be reached by golf cart if needed. There are no cars allowed on Sunset Key, which adds exclusivity and quiet to the islands ambience.

The Grounds:

A winding stone path set in a manicured lawn, leads through the lush landscaping, to the front entrance adorned with a charming garden arbor. As you reach the front porch, notice how the home maximizes indoor-outdoor Caribbean style living with 1st and 2nd floor covered porches that wrap around from the front to one side the home. Multiple sets of French doors on both levels, assure easy access to the porches throughout the house. Comfortable and stylish outdoor furnishings make it easy to relax outside and look out over the gardens and the swimming pool. The crowning touch is a covered roof top viewing tower, stylized in homage to the traditional ‘widows walk.’ From this spot, you’ll enjoy many evenings of famous Key West sunsets.

Interior Layout:

Our tour begins at the front entrance, though a double set of French doors directly past a charming garden arbor. Throughout the interior, the designer created an ambience of understated elegance, befitting the stature of Sunset Key, epitomizing the upscale resort island setting. Evoking a distinctive ‘Tommy Bahama’ feel, tropical furnishings throughout are casual yet sophisticated done in soft Caribbean earth tones, wicker, wood, and bamboo. Wall colors of sunshine yellow are trimmed with bright white crown molding, and custom plantation shutters on the windows and doors adding a feeling of richness.

Downstairs: The front door steps directly into the center of the spacious open-concept great-room. Immediately to your right, find the inviting living room area, furnished for comfort as well as style with a cushy sofa with chaise, loveseat, easy chairs, and a large flat screen TV. Occasional tables in honey colored wood, designer metal palm tree lamps, and artwork of a crowning sunset reflect the special island location of the home.

On the opposite side of the 1st floor is the L-shape designer kitchen. Custom light ash wood cabinets are topped with gray-black granite, a wooden ceiling fan with carved leaf blades, and top of the line stainless steel appliances complete the perfect look for an up-scale island kitchen. The breakfast bar / cocktail counter with black leather counter chairs, make it easy to entertain and snack. When you want to sit down and dine, a round wooden dining table and leather chairs, is conveniently placed in the center of the great room between the kitchen and the living room.

Before going upstairs, there are two more rooms to see on the 1st floor. Immediately to the left of the front entrance is a bathroom with shower, an appreciated convenience when you come in from the swimming pool. Then, off the back wall of the great-room, to the left of the stairs, is a beautiful executive office space with large L-shaped desk. This added feature is ideal for those who plan to work remotely during their Key West sojourn.

Upstairs: The wooden stairway to the 2nd floor is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Key West switch-back. Flat wide hand railings and trim boards painted bright white accentuate the lines. Set against the pale yellow walls, the staircase becomes a gallery for artwork. At the top of the stairs, a hallway, furnished in the same theme as the 1st floor, leads to the two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Both bedrooms are finished in hard wood flooring and have multiple windows for viewing the garden and pool scene below.

Immediately to the top of the stair landing, is the guest bedroom with en-suite bathroom. Breaking away from the pale yellow wall tones in the rest of the house, this bedroom is done in a lovely shade of Caribbean blue. Bright white cottage style furnishings are a nice contrast to the hardwood floors. A flat screen TV is mounted on the wall at the foot of the beds. Outside access is through a single French door leads to the 2nd floor covered porch, where a set of wicker chaises are placed for outdoor lounging. Back inside, we take a peek at the en-suite bathroom. Done in set in granite on bright white cabinets, this bathroom provides a soaking tub, with in-tub shower, for personal hydro therapy. Step back into the hallway, and before we look at the master bedroom, notice the conveniently located laundry closet with stackable washer and dryer, hidden behind louver doors.

At the end of the hall, we find the master bedroom, furnished in honey tone wood and wicker, offering a king size bed and appointed in elegant red and gold upholstery and bedding. A large flat screen TV is placed on the bureau for easy watching in bed. Then, when you want to step outside, double sets of French doors lead to the 2nd floor covered porch. From here you have a command view of the swimming pool from a comfortable set of wicker chairs and ottomans. Around the corner, a hammock is strung to encourage maximum relaxation indulgence. The beautiful en-suite bathroom provides double sinks set in granite on bright white cabinets, an oversized shower with frameless glass doors, and upscale fixtures and accessories.

Rooftop Deck: A custom spiral staircase, just outside the door to the master bedroom, leads to the crowning glory of the house – the covered rooftop deck. From here you’ll catch some sensational sunsets that gave this private island the name of Sunset Key. Furnished with a bar height glass-and-metal table with four chair back stools, you can linger in comfort, wine or margarita in hand. From this spot there is no doubt that you have arrived
