Tropical Sun Garden Retreat

This private cottage has all of that and more. Situated in the Conch Grove Garden compound, in Old Town Key West, this quiet little gated community has only 10 other charming conch cottages surrounding a large heated swimming pool, making it even more ideal to escape the hectic pressures of the present.

Because our Tropical Sun Garden Retreat vacation rental is nestled in its own large corner lot of the compound, it offers plenty of privacy. Inside the cottage, the feeling is casual laid-back Key West, like you’ve just been welcomed home. An open concept living room / kitchen, set in the middle of the cottage, creates a great-room with full glass door views of the covered front porch and garden. The fully equipped kitchen extends from one side of the great-room, towards the back-door entrance. A bank of light wood kitchen cupboards are a nice complement to the stainless steel appliances, sunny yellow walls, and Mexican tile floor that extends throughout the house. Plenty of granite counter top space and a tin tile back-splash completes an updated look for the kitchen.

The living /dining area are visually defined from the kitchen with a wooden entertainment center, complete with book-shelves and kitchen desk. A 48” HD TV is placed so it’s easily seen from everywhere in the great-room. Whimsical nautical artwork throughout the room ties the cottage to its island location. The wooden dining table and turquoise chairs are placed opposite the room from the comfy sofa and loveseat grouping. Furnishings are placed so you can always enjoy a view of the porch and garden. The living room has a queen sleeper sofa to offer a separate sleeping option if desired.

The covered porch is spacious, and wraps around the living room extending along the garden side of the house, creating an outside living room and dining area. The owners note that this is where most guests spend most their time. One end of the porch is tiled and furnished with a sofa and chairs to create an inviting outdoor lounge. The other side is set as a dining space with a dining table and chairs.

The outside porch also connects directly with the master suite. A door steps directly into the bathroom, with bath tub and in-tub shower, very convenient when you come in from the pool. Directly to the right, is a pocket door leading to the master bedroom furnished with a king size bed and 22 inch TV. Open beamed ceilings and walls painted white and blond wicker furniture, give the master bedroom a coastal cottage ambience. Multiple windows invite in the sunlight, or block it out if you close the wooden shutters.

The second bedroom and bathroom adjoin the great-room, just around the corner from the loveseat, in our slide show photo. Painted a soft pistachio green, the roomy bedroom provides a queen size 4-poster wooden bed, with matching dresser and side tables, and 22 inch TV. A large closet at the opposite of the entrance door to this bedroom, serves as the laundry room, with ample space for hanging and storing other items. Windows on either side of the bed let in plenty of sunlight when the shutters are open. The all-white basic bathroom has a one person tiled shower and vanity. A separate door makes the bathroom accessible to the great-room without going into the second bedroom.

Back into the kitchen, at the opposite end from the living / dining area, is the back door that leads to two private parking spaces and the street. Guests are directed to enter the back door when they arrive as convenient access to parking and the street make this the preferred entrance.

But you can also come home through the compound gate that winds through a tropical garden along a paved path. Once you step through the gate, it feels like an island oasis all its own, and when you see the large swimming pool the stress melts away.

Grounds: Originally created in the 1970’s, I fell in love with this unique compound in 1998, when a close friend lived here. Today the gardens have grown into even more of a paradise, a hidden Key West gem. The community grounds are impeccably maintained, and hold all their original authenticity, complete with the legacy pool-house painted by Key West artist Rick Worth. Charming island cottages, each one unique, are dotted around the parameter of the compound to share a large sunny in-ground heated swimming pool set in the middle.

Our Tropical Sun Garden Retreat vacation rental, sits back in the corner from the community pool and gardens, on a 5,426 ft. lot. This property is offered as a month long or seasonal rental only.

Renovated fully equipped kitchen, a/c, WiFi, cable TV and DVR, washer / dryer. Linens and towels are provided. Maid service can be scheduled.

Activities: Easy walk to Higgs Beach, in the Casa Marina neighborhood for tennis, boating, beaching, West Martello Towers Fort garden club, and bocce ball courts. From this location you can quickly walk to White Street and the White Street Gallery neighborhood. Here you find Fausto’s Fine Food Palace (fine wines, cheeses, and gourmet foods), Sandy’s Café for Cuban coffee, yoga and exercise studios, restaurants, galleries, boutique stores, and more. Duval Street is an easy 10 to 15 minute walk or a bike ride.

Area: This home is centrally located in the Heart of Old Town Key West in a quiet historic neighborhood just a few steps from White Street and the Truman Avenue corridor. Center of Old Town Key West Historic District, the ‘residential heart’ of the island. Historic streets lined with wooden cottages, many of which were built as cigar makers’ cottages in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Private off-street parking – park your car and walk to all Duval Street and Old Town features.

Parking: Two designated off-street parking spaces. Once you arrive park your car and enjoy getting around the island by bicycle.

Pets: Well behaved small dog, 35 pounds or less, are allowed. Pet fee required. Pet must be walked off-premises. Please inquire for more details on pet rules. Some restrictions apply.

Restrictions: This is a friendly space designed to find peace and relaxation, and take in the sun and garden ambience. Guests must respect the pool and community gardens and use them as they are intended, according to compound rules. Pool parties are forbidden with posted rules. We do not accept guests less than 25 years of age unless accompanied by a family group or guardian.
